Homage to other artists
Their first album Homework pays homage to a number of different artists that include Brian Wilson and Bob Marley. The Daft Punk track "Teachers", from Homework, refers to several influences, such as Romanthony and Todd Edwards. In an interview Daft Punk stated that Andy Warhol was one of early artistic influences.
Bricolage
Daft Punk have said that they like use old instruments in different ways to create new sounds and new music, this is a form of bricolage.
Intertextual references
In the song Derezzed, Daft Punk have many intertextual references to the film Tron. The opening shot of the arcade in combination with traditional 8-bit arcade sound effects is nostalgic of the original film Tron and the 80s decade where video games were first being invented. Also, the design of the title of the arcade machine (which is also the name of the song) is very similar.
Consumption
Daft Punk release their music on CD albums and online for people to download on itunes etc. Daft Punk have also released their albums and some of their singles on a vinyl.
Simulacrum
Thomas Bangalter (silver robot): "We're interested in the line between fiction and reality, creating these fictional personas that exist in real life" — and a way to enfold Daft Punk's music within a tradition of flamboyant pop theatricality that includes "Kraftwerk and Ziggy Stardust and KISS; people thought the helmets were marketing or something, but for us it was sci-fi glam."
Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (gold robot): "We're not performers, we're not models — it would not be enjoyable for humanity to see our features … but the robots are exciting to people."
Creation of music
To get those sounds, the pair uses many vintage keyboards, including Korg, Roland and Moog gear from the '70s. “We use the big ones that were used in the '70s, like the Juno. It depends on how you use it — if you put a distortion effect on a Juno, you can't tell it's a Juno.” Their main synths include a TR-909, TR-808, Juno-106, ARP Odyssey, E-mu 3 and AMS Phasers.
Performance
The music videos for their singles from Homework featured distinctive characters and placed emphasis on storytelling instead of musical performance an example of this is in the song around the world. Each of the different figures in the music video represents a musical instrument that they used to make the song.
